POLISH HONORS FIRST POLISH SETTERS IN AMERICA WITH SILVER & GLASS AND NORDIC GOLD COINS

A group of about eight craftsmen and artisans from Poland were part of the second party of settlers to join the Jamestown settlement in Virginia. They arrived in 1608, just two years after the founding of Jamestown as the first permanent English settlement in North America. Included in the party were glass makers who built a first glass smelting furnace, allowing for the production of jars and windowpanes. To mark the 400th anniversary of these early settlers, Poland issued a silver and glass 10 Zlotych and a “Nordic Gold” (A brass alloy) 2 Zlote. The 10 Zlote has a glass center picturing a glass blower surrounded by a silver ring. Various images of the settlers and their craft are pictured on the silver ring. The silver has an antiqued finish. The coin comes in a (slightly scratched) protective plastic capsule. The Uncirculated 27mm 2 Zlote pictures a man blowing glassware on one side and the Polish arms on the other.
