Syria issued this bi-metallic 25 Pound coin in 1995. Pictured on one side is Syrian President Hafiz-al Assad. The other side portrays the Syrian arms featuring a stylized eagle. Assad was a clever and ruthless politician that managed to survive two defeats by Israel. He brought stability to the Syrian government that had been rocked by numerous coups - at the cost of thousands of lives. His son now rules the country.
